What is break-even?

Break-even is the sales level where contribution margin exactly covers fixed costs. Below it the business operates at a loss; above it each additional unit contributes to profit, assuming the inputs remain unchanged.

How to use it

  1. Enter fixed costs for the period.
  2. Enter the selling price per unit.
  3. Enter the variable cost per unit.
  4. Review contribution margin, required units and break-even revenue.

Why use it

How the calculation works

Contribution margin equals unit price minus variable cost. Break-even units equal fixed costs divided by contribution margin, rounded up to a whole unit.

FAQ

Is my data uploaded?

No. Calculator values stay in your browser. Analytics sends only the tool name, language and a fixed event type.

Does the Excel file contain macros?

No. The workbook uses normal cells, formulas and formatting only.

Can I use the Excel file offline?

Yes. Download it once and keep using it without this website.

Can I change the currency?

Yes. Select USD, EUR, RUB, or GBP on the page or in the Excel workbook. Changing the currency only changes the unit label, not the amounts or exchange rate.
